The bloom in the Netherlands and the magic of flowers according to Carole Baijings: An Exclusive Interview
Spring in the Netherlands is a vibrant explosion of colors and scents, a unique moment when nature awakens, transforming the landscape into a sea of flowers. This breathtaking phenomenon captivates the soul, much like the designs of renowned Dutch designer Carole Baijings.
1. Describe your perfect day.
My perfect day begins with a sense of peace, waking up next to the person I love. After a simple, wholesome breakfast, I hop on my bike and head to my studio. That’s where the magic happens: working on new projects, sketches, color samples, and models.
I love seeing an idea come to life, like a flower slowly blooming. There’s something deeply moving about this process, as if every new project is a creation born from nothing, just like a flower emerging from the earth.
2. What does “Living Marble” mean to you?
Marble, like life itself, is constantly evolving unpredictable and extraordinary. “Living Marble” gives me the opportunity to explore infinite possibilities, unveiling hidden forms and unique beauties. Thanks to Luce di Carrara, I have been able to highlight the lightness of marble through sophisticated robotic technology, making both its strength and fragility visible.
A perfect example of this is my “Perforations” collection. Walking through the Henraux marble quarry, I felt small before the vastness of nature, and at the same time deeply inspired by the unique and irreplaceable beauty of each individual marble block.
3. Tell us about the charm of Dutch flowers.
I’m a true “flower girl,” and living in the Netherlands feels like a dream. Every corner of the country is infused with flowers, and every spring bursts with vibrant life. Here, you can buy individual flowers and create personalized bouquets, blending colors, textures, and shapes. I love playing with the details of a floral arrangement, just as I do in my design projects. Each flower tells a story, and every composition is a unique experience.
Whenever I present my work in Europe, I always bring a touch of the Netherlands with carefully chosen flowers. Once, Tom Delavan, Design Director at T: The New York Times Style Magazine, told me, “You could open your own flower shop, haha!” He was so captivated by the flowers I selected for my presentation—and shortly after, our home was featured in the magazine.
4. What is your favorite flower, why do you love it, and how does it connect to Muze?
My favorite flower is the Gloriosa. It’s delicate, colorful, and full of elegant shapes, yet at the same time light and airy. The Gloriosa is bold, vibrant, and full of life just like nature itself. It often comes from the Netherlands or Japan, two of my favorite countries along with Italy, of course.
These flowers fit perfectly into the Muze vases, which are inspired by the feminine form, creating a seamless harmony between nature and design.
