A refined combination of techniques and savoir-faire.
Michael Anastassiades’ Miracle Chips for Luce di Carrara will be showcased in full, more than a decade after their creation, highlighting their status as a timeless triumph in product design, born from a sophisticated fusion of techniques and expertise.
Sculptural design
The name is inspired both by the 2010 book Miracle Crisps by Californian artist John Baldessari and by the DCW plywood chairs by Ray and Charles Eames, nicknamed the “Potato Chip chairs.” The sculptural design of the Miracle Chips also draws inspiration from the “miracle fish,” a red cardboard toy used for divination that curls and moves in response to the heat and moisture of the hand, believed to reveal the mood, emotions, and temperament of the person holding it.
Each of the seven pieces that make up the Miracle Chips is carved from a single solid block of Italian marble sourced from our quarry in Tuscany; the result is a combination of intricate and delicate forms that push the marble beyond its limits, making it appear malleable, pliable, and soft.
Production phase
The use of high-precision machinery and robotic technology, specially developed and customized for our needs, allows Luce di Carrara to transform each piece of the Miracle Chips collection from a single block of marble, which is carefully wire-cut to reduce each element to its basic volume.
Next, the stones pass through manual machines that, using various high-precision tools, gently sculpt them, transforming them into nearly finished products. Finally, just like every single piece crafted by Luce di Carrara, the company’s artisans add the finishing touches, carefully removing the last layers of marble to smooth and shape them into their final form, turning each element of the Miracle Chips collection into truly unique pieces.
